Akamai Advantage by HMSA Review Hawaii Medicare Plans

HMSA is the name of healthcare in Hawaii.  They are an independent carrier for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Hawaii and provide coverage for over half of the Hawaiian population!  They provide 5 Medicare Advantage plans in the state of Hawaii under the name of Akamai Advantage.  The plan names are:  Akamai Advantage Select, Akamai Advantage Secure, Akamai Advantage Select Plus, Akamai Advantage Preferred, and Akamai Advantage Assured.  These plans are all PPO’s with the Preferred and Secure plans being Regional PPO’s.

Akamai Advantage Select

  • Premium – $0
  • Max Out-of-Pocket In-Network – $3,400
  • Hospital Co-pay – $195 days 1-5
  • Doctor Co-pays – Primary – $5; Specialists – $10
  • Outpatient Surgery – 20% Co-pay
  • Labs and X-rays – $0-10; $16 Co-pay
  • Diagnostic Tests – $10
  • Part D Drug Co-pays – Tier 1 – $4; Tier 2 – $30; Tier 3 – $65; Tier 4 – 25%

Akamai Advantage Select Plus

  • Premium – $30
  • Max Out-of-Pocket In-Network – $3,400
  • Hospital Co-pay – $100 days 1-5
  • Doctor Co-pays – Primary – $5; Specialists – $5
  • Outpatient Surgery – $15 Co-pay
  • Labs and X-rays – $0-15; $15 Co-pay
  • Diagnostic Tests – $15
  • Part D Drug Co-pays – Tier 1 – $4; Tier 2 – $30; Tier 3 – $65; Tier 4 – 25%

Akamai Advantage Assured

  • Premium – $8
  • Max Out-of-Network In-Network – $3,400
  • Hospital Co-pay – $300 covers entire stay
  • Doctor Co-pays $15 for Primary and Specialists
  • Outpatient Surgery – $15 Co-pay
  • Labs and X-rays – $0-15; $15 Co-pay
  • Diagnostic Tests – $15
  • Part D Drug coverage not Available!

Akamai Advantage Secure

  • Premium – $0
  • Max Out-of-Network In-Network – $3,400
  • Hospital Co-pay – $220 days 1-17
  • Doctor Co-pays – Primary – $10; Specialists – $40
  • Outpatient Surgery – 20%
  • Labs and X-rays – $0-10; $16 Co-pay
  • Diagnostic Tests – $10
  • Part D Drug Co-pays – Tier 1 – $6; Tier 2 – $45; Tier 3 – $85; Tier 4 – 33%

Akamai Advantage Preferred

  • Premium – $54
  • Max Out-of-Network In-Network – $3,400
  • Hospital Co-pay – $300 covers entire stay
  • Doctor Co-pays – $15 for Primary and Specialists
  • Outpatient Surgery – $15
  • Labs and X-rays – $0-15; $15 Co-pay
  • Diagnostic Tests – $15
  • Part D Drug Co-pays – Tier 1 – $4; Tier 2 – $30; Tier 3 – $65; Tier 4 – 25%

A brief glance shows that the Select and Select Plus plans are superior to the other plans that are listed.  The catch is that they are only available to residence of Honolulu county.  The other three plans are statewide Regional PPOs.  None of the plans require referrals, and you are allowed to see doctors in and out of network since they are PPO plans.  Check out the HMSA Akamai website to see more detail about what the plans cover.

      I don’t work for Akamai Advantage. I just review their plans. Also, I don’t know what your current coverage looks like. Remember when you’re looking at HMO’s to make sure that they include the providers in network that you want to use.
