Anthem Medicare Preferred Core and Select BCBS PPO Review

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield offers several Medicare Advantage programs throughout several different states.  Everyone is probably familiar with Blue Cross and Blue Shield as a company, and many of you have probably hear of Anthem before.  Anthem Medicare Preferred Core and Anthem Medicare Preferred Select are two Medicare Advantage PPO’s that Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield offer.  Preferred Core is offered in Colorado, Missouri, Nevada, and Wisconsin.  Preferred Select is offered in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin.  Below is a summary of the benefits that these plans offer:

Anthem Medicare Preferred Core (PPO)

  • Premium – $0/month for all states
  • Maximum Out of Pocket – Nevada = $6,000; Wisconsin = $4,500; Colorado = $6,500; Missouri = $4,500
  • Hospital Copay – Nevada = $259/day; Wisconsin + Missouri = $205/day; Colorado = $268/day
  • Doctor’s Visits – $0 copay for all states
  • Specialists Visits – Nevada + Colorado = $40; Wisconsin + Missouri = $45
  • Outpatient Surgery – Nevada = $0 – $268; Wisconsin + Missouri = $0 – $200; Colorado = $230 – $250
  • Labs – $0 copay for all states
  • Diagnostic Procedures and tests – Nevada = $0 – $400; Wisconsin + Missouri = $0 – $150; Colorado = $0 – $200
  • X-Rays – Nevada = $65; Wisconsin + Missouri = $105; Colorado = $35
  • Part D Deductible – All states have $60 except for Nevada which is $250
  • Tier 1 for all states offers a $0 copay
  • Preventative dental, vision, and hearing are not included

Anthem Medicare Preferred Select (PPO)

  • Premium – Wisconsin = $36; Ohio + Kentucky = $59; Indiana = $64
  • Maximum Out of Pocket – $3,400 for all states
  • Hospital Copay – Ohio = $200/day; Wisconsin + Kentucky = $175/day; Indiana = $185/day
  • Doctor’s Visits – $10 copay for all states except Wisconsin = $5
  • Specialists Visits – $20 copay for all states except Kentucky = $15
  • Outpatient Surgery – $0 – $150 for all states except Ohio = $0 – $175
  • Labs – $0 copay for all states
  • Diagnostic Procedures and tests – Wisconsin = $0 – $120; Ohio = $0 – $155, Kentucky + Indiana = $0 – $125
  • X-Rays - Wisconsin = $60; Ohio = $95; Kentucky + Indiana = $75
  • Part D Deductible – All states have $60 except for Wisconsin which is $0
  • Tier 1 for all states offers a $7 copay except for Wisconsin which is $5
  • Preventative dental, vision, and hearing are included except for Wisconsin

CAUTION:  Do not choose a plan simply because it is backed by a well-known name like Blue Cross and Blue Shield.  Always compare plans yourself at medicare.gov or consult with an independent insurance producer for your area.
