Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida is rebranding itself to Florida Blue. With so many choices in the Medicare market you should be aware that when you see Florida Blue you know you are dealing with BCBS of FL. But this isn’t your parent’s Blue Cross.
Florida Blue wants to Be Number One In The Florida Medicare Market
They are backing up their name change with a renewed commitment to improving their benefit offerings. Their Regional PPO and Medicare HMOs are now some of the more competitive in the market. They have expanded their HMO offerings into seven new counties for 2013, and they are looking to expand further. This new direction comes on the heels of a new CEO running the company.
Perhaps one of the biggest benefits to you regarding Florida Blue is the extensive size of the network. You will see this when you look at the Blue Medicare Regional PPO. They have over 75% of doctors and hospitals in the state of Florida in their network. They are also pushing the regional network to include 30 states! If you are on a Medicare supplement or are considering one, you may want to take a second look at the BlueMedicare Regional PPO which will have a $0 monthly plan premium again this year!
They are also trying to decrease or hold steady their Medicare supplement rates while competitor AARP is increasing their supplement rates by 5%. This new approach is a welcome change from the old BCBS of Florida who seemed to rely on their name recognition and less on robust benefits or a value based approach. In less than a week the new benefit information for 2013 will be released. Starting on October 15th you will be able to enroll into one of the Florida Blue plans if you want. I will have updated information on this site so check back regularly. If you have not already, sign up for my free mini-course in the upper right hand corner!
