Wellcare PDP – Wellcare Classic or Wellcare Signature

Wellcare is a large company based out of Tampa, Florida that offers Medicare insurance and Prescription Drug coverage.  Their Medicare Prescription drug plans are the Wellcare Classic PDP and the Wellcare Signature PDP.  Depending on which plan you choose you may be able to receive $0 copays on generic drugs or a $0 deductible.   Wellcare does offer a discount when ordering a three month supply through the mail.  Neither of the Wellcare plans offer any additional coverage through the Coverage Gap.  Let’s look at the difference between the two plans:

Wellcare Classic PDP

  • Lower premium than the Wellcare Signature plan.  Less than $30 in some areas.
  • $320 deductible
  • Preferred generic drugs $0
  • Preferred brand drugs $38
  • Non-preferred drugs $90
  • Specialty Tier Drugs 25%

Wellcare Signature PDP

  • Higher premium than the Wellcare Classic plan.  Around $55 in some areas.
  • $0 deductible
  • Preferred generic drugs $0
  • Non-Preferred brand drugs $20
  • Preferred brand drugs $45
  • Non-Preferred brand drugs $85
  • Specialty Tier drugs 33%

Wellcare covers more than 60,000 pharmacies in their network including popular chain stores like Walgreens, CVS, Wal-mart, Target, Kmart, Winn-dixie, and Publix.  The formulary is different for each plan, so be sure to check your drugs against each formulary.  The Wellcare website offers a tool that allows you to enter your drugs and compare the two plans to see which one makes the most sense for you.  Remember you can also compare all drug plans by going to the Medicare website and entering your drugs there as well!  If you are in Florida or Alabama and are interested in enrolling into Wellcare you can use this link.
